I think Shakespeare intended Ophelia to be portrayed as a woman driven to insanity by the death of her father. She was to show how losing love and losing her father made her crazy because she must have felt alone. Everyone needed to be loved and the two most close to her were gone. Hamlet had went crazy and broke up with her and then later on, Hamlet kills her father. It must have been surreal to Ophelia. Ophelia final moments were sad,she seemed lost in all the grief and confusion and did not know what was going on. I do not believe that she intended to drown herself intentionally, but sine she lost touch with reality,it was as if she was trying to make believe that nothing happened and all was well. She did give in when the branch broke and I feel as though gertude could have helped her. She could have took action, not to leave her all alone because she was dangerous to everyone around her as well as herself. Losing touch with reality when all this diaster struck is what drove her to the edge. She could not bear it and it was too mch pain for her to deal with by herself. I do feel really sorry for Ophelia because she could have been helped and more protected, so that she would not have died and worse of all her finally days were filled with grief and confusion.
I strongly feel that Ophelia should have a rites to a proper burial ground because it was not her fault. There are many reasons why she should have it. First of all, Gertude knew that
Ophelia's mind was not in the best shape and that she was unstable. i think that Gertude should have protected and done everything in her power to make sure she was secure. She could have put guards with Ophelia to keep watch on her at all times then maybe her death would not have happened. Another reason, why Ophelia should have burial rites is because no one was there to see what happened to Ophelia, there was no witness.and why would a person who has gone insane try to kill themselves? That does not make any sense, there is a difference between being crazy and being suicidal. Therefore, she should be allowed to have proper burial rites.
